Eight Bridges Brewing Starts Veterans On-the-Job Training Program

When we opened Eight Bridges it was just the family working in the company.  The four of us did all the brewing, sales, delivery, opened the tasting room, pint nights and many other things that go on behind the scenes of a new start up!  Last year you probably started noticing new faces around as we started hiring employees.  We haven’t shined the spotlight on them and thought it was time we did.  So we’ll begin a series of articles telling you a little more about each employee.

We’re going to start with the latest employee we hired because it ties in to a great program we’re part of and a fundraiser we’re holding Saturday January 30.

We recently received approval to start an on-the-job training program for veterans through the Veterans Administration.  This program allows veterans to use their Post 9-11 GI bill benefits to provide extra income while they train from entry level brewery positions to journeyman brewers.  On December 1, 2015 our first veteran trainee, Kurt Heuer, began the 1000+ hours of one-on-one training with Brewmaster, Justin.  Not to toot our horn, but currently we are the only craft brewery that offers this program.

So lets welcome Kurt to the family by putting him in the Employee Spotlight!!

Kurt & George . . . Our Veterans!

  1. If you could be a Superhero, what would your name be and what superpower would you have?
I don’t know about a name, but telekinesis would be my choice. Being able to move things with my mind just seems like it would come in handy the most often.
  2. If you could have a drink with anyone (fictional, alive, dead, famous, non famous) who would it be?
Jasper “Jack” Daniels. I’m a third generation Tennessee Squire so, after beer, Old No. 7 is my go-to. I’d like to ask him the story behind “Old No. 7” as nobody at the distillery knows for sure. I’d also warn him to watch his temper and not kick the safe, of course.
  3. Have you ever stolen a pen that writes exceptionally well from a restaurant?
No, but my girlfriend Lindsay does. She’ll usually trade it with one in her purse so she doesn’t leave the server hanging.
  4. What is one of your guilty pleasures?
Video games. I started out on computers and changed to consoles when I was about 20. Still love ’em. I actually got an Xbox One for Christmas and am REALLY enjoying it!
  5. If Hollywood made a movie about you, who would you like to see cast as you?
Some nobody actor. Like, somebody JUST starting out. I feel pretty fortunate to be doing what I’m doing, and it was a combination of support from friends and family, people taking a chance on me, and luck that got me here. I wish everyone could have that kind of opportunity.

What you might not know is George Beardsley is also a veteran of the Air Force!  This is one reason we’re holding a fundraiser supporting the Veterans First Program at Las Positas College here in Livermore.  Saturday January 30 is our first Brewzza Palooza of 2016.  If you haven’t attended a Brewzza Palooza yet, they’re a day filled with great food, fun, family, good beer and music!  For this event, Soleil Wood Fired Pizza will be here all day serving up delicious pizza and Jeff Ricketts and The Dirt Road Band will  be preforming from 5 – 8 pm.

But the star of the day will be the Veteran’s program.  We’re donating a portion of the days proceeds to this great cause.  So come on out and join the fun all while supporting the Veterans First Program!!
